In the figures above, we show the piano-roll, swingogram, and tempogram of a solo section from the 1961 recording of "Down Under," with solo trumpet player Freddie Hubbard playing together with drummer and bandleader Art Blakey. At an average tempo of around 146 BPM, the ride cymbal swing ratio exhibits a slightly wavy variation around 3.5. In constrast, Hubbard stays at the other end of the swing-ratio range and plays his onbeat onsets in a laid-back fashion behind the beat. His offbeats, however, synchronize very well to Blakey's offbeats most of the time as hypothesized by Friberg [5].
